The curriculum for elementary school science provides a framework for engaging, inquiry-based science instruction that prepares students with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to succeed in science throughout their education and beyond. It is aligned to the NYS Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and focuses on the three key dimensions of Science and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts. Each K-5 grade level has an integrated science approach that scaffolds Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, and Engineering Design.
The NYSSLS-aligned curricula for middle and high school science aims to provide students with a solid foundation in core scientific concepts and practices while also fostering critical thinking, inquiry skills, and an understanding of the interconnectedness of scientific disciplines. While still emphasizing the three dimensions of science learning, courses are designed to build upon students' understanding of science over time. In grades 6-12, students deepen their understanding of core scientific concepts introduced in elementary school while also exploring more complex ideas. Students are encouraged to apply their scientific knowledge and skills to real-world issues and phenomena.
