Third Graders Head to District-Owned Farm to Plant Cabbages

Despite the unseasonably cool temperatures, it definitely is spring. And Burr and Sawmill third graders headed to the district-owned Marion Carll Farm on Friday morning to plant cabbage seedlings.
The students learned how to properly space the cabbages, using a tape measure to ensure 36 inches between their plantings.
They then dug holes to the proper depth, added a little plant food and watered the new plantings.
They may have even discovered an earthworm or two, which they learned are helpful in aerating the soil.
Last school year, a Sawmill fourth grader planted a cabbage at Marion Carll Farm that ultimately weighed in at more than 18 pounds and won a New York State contest.
