Student Leaders Head to Albany to Advocate for Commack

Fourteen CHS student leaders headed to Albany on Wednesday to have their voices heard by state government representatives as well as Department of Education leaders.
Members of the high school’s legislative advocacy committee made the trip to meet with state senator Mario Mattera and assemblymen Keith Brown and Michael Fitzpatrick.
The students, along with superintendent Dr. Jordan Cox, Board of Education president Steven Hartman and other district officials, then headed to the Department of Education. There, they again advocated for Commack in subject matter including school safety, financial literacy and agriculture education, and mental health.
The Department of Education officials, led during the session by associate commissioner Elisa Alvarez and assistant commissioner Dr. Anael Alston, took copious notes during the students’ presentations and asked insightful follow-up questions.
Commack annually makes the trip in order for students to meet legislators and state education officials and advocate for their rights as well as our community’s interests.
“Pleases continue to come up and educate us,” Dr. Alston told the students. “We need you.”
