CHS Students Prepare Hygiene Kits for Homeless Veterans
The General Needs charity was founded at Commack High School, when Lonnie Sherman’s children wanted to help veterans as part of their public-service requirement.
Now, Sherman’s three children are in their 30s. And the charity has blossomed during the past 15 years.
On Wednesday, students in CHS’ young adult program made their weekly visit to the charity to prepare hygiene kits for homeless veterans. They placed items including socks, a T-shirt, underwear, shaving cream, toothpaste, mouthwash and shampoo in each bag, plus a card for the veteran recipient.
Plenty of other good work was occurring on Wednesday morning as well. Social workers were at the charity’s storage facility collecting items for a homeless veteran about to move into an apartment.
