Burr Fifth Graders Adopt Gorilla, Elephant
A pair of Burr fifth-grade classes have adopted a gorilla and an elephant.
Lauren Duval and Dominic Fontana’s students recently read, “The One and Only Ivan” — a powerful story about a gorilla and an elephant who find freedom after being held in captivity.
Inspired by the novel, students raised funds to adopt a real gorilla and elephant in Africa through The Fahlo.
The project not only taught the students empathy and kindness, but also helped protect wildlife in their natural habitats. The classes can use tracking devices to follow the animals’ journeys in Africa.
