Paws of War Visits Burr
Burr third graders welcomed a special visitor on Monday morning.
Paws of War, including furry friend Lucy the labradoodle, met with students to explain the charity’s mission and thank the students for their fundraising.
Paws of War trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to military veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war.
In the weeks leading up to the Paws of War visit, third grade students decorated pins with patriotic themes to thank the veterans.
Some of the pins were sold to staff members and others who visited the school, with the proceeds donated to Paws of War. Other pins were presented to military veterans who visited Burr just before Veterans Day. The remaining pins were given to Paws of War on Monday.
“They like to say that they rescue both sides of the leash,” said third grade teacher Keri Cestaro, who has a longtime relationship with Paws of War. “It's such a great organization.”
Lucy, who is a therapy dog in addition to a service dog, ended the session by interacting with the students.
