Burr Student Council Leaders Host Veterans
Burr fifth-grade student-council representatives gained a further appreciation for service to the nation from a quartet of special visitors on Thursday.
The students had lunch with four military veterans and had the chance to hear about their service and ask questions.
The luncheon continued a strong bond between Burr and the Northport VA Medical Center that extends to other events, including Flag Day.
Joe Sledge, who has worked for the Northport VA Medical Center for 32 years after four years of peacetime military service as a Morse code intercept operator, is the father of Burr fourth-grade teacher Emily Walther.
Sledge brought three other veterans with him on Thursday, two of whom were Vietnam War veterans. The other guest was U.S. Navy veteran Grace Mehl, who commanded a ship with 700 combined Navy and Marines members. She received a Bronze Star in 1999.
